Is feeling broken and fractured something we have to accept and learn to live with?

In pre Covid-19 times, our sense of well-being was being tested. Both mental and emotional breakdowns were on the increase. Anxiety, feelings of not being able to cope, of continually being judged were somehow normalised.

Our self-esteem is undermined if our social media posts don’t receive enough ‘likes’. Access to treatment and expert support services are in horrifyingly short supply. The healthcare system that we relied upon no longer serves our needs. Everything is at ‘breaking point.’

The imposition of remote working increased our sense of isolation. “Zoom fatigue” is a real phenomenon.

Senior managers struggle to cope with the pressures in their own lives along with the demands of a new way of working.
A survey conducted by Oracle, found that 53 per cent of C-suite executives – people with senior company roles like Chief Executive Officer or Chief Operating Officer -struggled with mental health issues, while 85 per cent reported significant remote working challenges.

How many C-suite executives will admit to the feelings described above? It is easier, and socially more acceptable to ‘confess’ to heart surgery or chemotherapy than to admit to depression.

Around a quarter (23 per cent) of American adults have to endure a diagnosable mental disorder. It stands to reason that some very senior company executives will be among that number and will be experiencing bouts of anxiety, depression, feelings of inadequacy – in silence.
